Although united by core values and aims, Portswood Primary Academy Trust encourages its academies to retain and nurture their individuality as well as being encouraged to develop a specialism which can be shared with others in the Trust and beyond.
Introduction and Statement of Intent
As a charity and company limited by guarantee Portswood Primary Academy Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees who are responsible for the general control and management of the administration of the Trust in accordance with the provisions set out in the Articles of Association.
The Board of Trustees are accountable to external Government agencies, including the Charity Commission and the Department for Education, for the quality of education provided. They are required to have systems in place through which they can assure themselves of quality, safety and good practice.
The Scheme of Delegation explains the ways in which the Board of Trustees fulfill their responsibilities for the leadership and management of the academies, the responsibilities of the Executive Board and the role of Local Governing Bodies.
Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees is responsible for
- ensuring that the standards in all academies are at least good
- ensuring that children and staff benefit from excellent teaching, learning and leadership
- ensuring that the Trust is compliant with the Academies Financial handbook
- annual approval of budgets
- appointment and dismissal of the Executive Board
- ensuring that the admissions policy is in accordance with admissions law
- the performance management of the CEO
- the development of policies that facilitate the delivery of the mission statement
The Board of Trustees’ intention is to be as light touch as possible within the scheme of delegation in order for the Executive Board and the Principals of the academies to make decisions at a local level to fully meet the needs of the children.
The Executive Board of Portswood Primary Academy Trust carries out the executive management function of the Trust. The Executive Board focuses on operational matters within the Trust and the performance and standards of each academy.
The Executive Board operates under the leadership of the CEO who is by virtue of his/her position a Director of the Trust.
The Executive Board supports the work of the Principals and the staff in each academy to ensure the Trust’s vision statement, values and mission statement are achieved.
The Board of Trustees delegates authority to the Executive Board to ensure the effective leadership and governance of the Trust.
The Executive Board will monitor, challenge and improve academy performance, ensuring that the standards in all academies are at least good.
Principals of Academies
The Principal of each academy is responsible for the day to day operation and management of the academy, ensuring that the Trust’s vision statement, values and mission statement are adhered to.
Local Governing Bodies
The Local Governing Bodies will provide support and challenge to the academies’ leaders.
